A draft resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers has been announced to implement the project “Preservation and Management of Lakes, Wetlands and Coastal Areas as a Basis for Sustainable Livelihoods in the Deg raded Lands of the Aral Sea Basin.” The Global Environment Facility (GEF) approved a grant of $3,552,968 on October 1, 2021, to support the project over a five-year period (2022–2026). In addition, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Country Office in Uzbekistan has committed $270,000 and will serve as a partner to the national implementing agency. A letter of agreement between the State Committee for Ecology and Environmental Protection and UNDP was signed on April 1, 2021, followed by the main project document on December 22, 2021.
The project targets the Muynak and Amudarya districts of Karakalpakstan, and Karakul and Alat districts of the Bukhara region. It aims to ensure sustainable management of water bodies and wetland ecosystems while supporting local livelihoods in ecologically degraded areas. The State Ecological Committee will coordinate project activities and ensure the efficient and transparent use of funds. Implementation will follow a national framework in accordance with the Uzbekistan–UNDP agreement signed in 1993. The resolution formalizes national support for effective project delivery and long-term environmental resilience.
